Tips for Performance Enhancements on Vista :

*Caution: Kindly evaluate and test out these steps in test environment before rolling out in production. There are some registry tweaks which can destabilize the installation.

*Note: These are in no way recommendations from Microsoft Corporation

Try Disabling the following services:

  • Diagnostic Policy Service
  • Diagnostic Service Host
  • Diagnostic System Host
  • Offline Files
  • Terminal Services
  • Windows Error Reporting Service
  • Windows Search (This will lead to losing out on Instant Search one of them most powerful feature in Windows Vista)
  • SuperFetch Service

Other configuration suggestions:
·         Speed up start menu search
o   HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Explorer > Advanced
o   Start_SearchFiles
o   Value to 0
o   Restart Explorer
·         Disable Remote Differential Compression
o   Start->run->optional features
o   Uncheck-> Disable Remote Differential Compression
·         Disable TCP Autotuning
o   At c: type netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
·         Install hotfix 931770
·         Disable Indexing
o   Start->Run-> services.msc
o   Uncheck Indexing service
·         Delete the index folder
o   Unhide hidden/system files in explorer
o   Browse to the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search
o   Delete search folder
·         Manage startup programs
o    Control Panel -> Performance Information And Tools
o   Uncheck
§  Microsoft Firewall Client
§  One note screen clipper
§  Etc…
·         Cross reference with the registry entries shown in the system information toon (msinfo32)
·         Delete the startup folder
o    Browse to All Users\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\StartMenu\Programs\Startup.
o    Right click and delete
·         Adjust processor scheduling for best performance
o    Performance options dialog box -> Adjust for best performance of programs
·         Set static paging file
o    Set appropriate Initial Size and Maximum Size fields in virtual memory dialog box
·         Increase SATA Disk Drive Performance
o    Open Device manager
o    Expand disk drives
o    Go to properties of %systemdrive%
o    On Policies tab, check Enable Advanced Performance

Optional configuration:
Disable DWM (if aero is a bottleneck; particularly when there is no dedicated Graphics RAM<64MB and Primary RAM <1 GB)
  • Download and install the following updates for Windows Vista which improves the performance:
      1. KB938194
      2. KB938979
      3. KB940105

  • Disable graphical effects and change settings for Virtual memory:
Ø  Right click on ComputeràPropertiesàclick Advanced tabà in ‘Performance’ option click Settingsàin ‘Performance Options’ select Visual Effects tabàchoose Adjust for best performanceàthen select Advanced tab in ‘Performance Options’àclick Change button to change ‘Virtual memory’àfor ‘system drive’ change the page file size setting to System managed sizeàclick OK on all windows and restart the computer.
   
  • Disable automatic Disk Defragmenter service and Super Fetch service:
Ø  Go to services of the computer click on StartàRunàtype Services.mscàin services search for super fetch serviceàStop and Disable the service.
Ø  Go to StartàProgramsàAccessoriesàSystem ToolsàDisk Defragmenteràremove the check mark present for scheduled disk defragmenter optionàclick OK.

  • Disable Windows Side Bar:
Ø  In some cases the Windows Side Bar slows down the machine performance. To disable Side barà right click on the Windows Side Bar icon present in the task barà click Exità a window will pop up and in that window remove the check mark which enables Side Bar whenever Windows startsàclick Exit
   
After completing the above mentioned tasks, check for the performance of Windows Vista by working on the computer for at least 1-2 days.
